The scouts rode 10.89 miles through Gettysburg. They stop on Oak Ridge where the first day's battles begun. The confederates approached from Cashtown in the West (7 miles away) and the mountains as seen in the distance. The Union defended this ridge until their lines finally collapsed late in the afternoon July 1, 1864.
